In his book “Our Final Hour”, British Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees estimates that the probability of extinction before 2100 AD is around 50%, based on the possibility of malign or accidental release of destructive technology.
Theodore Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, raved that a particle accelerator experiment could set off a chain reaction that would destroy the world. Recently, it was argued in the press that the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) on Long Island, New York, might create a subatomic black hole that would slowly nibble away our planet.
Alternately, it might create exotic bits of altered matter, called strangelets, that would obliterate whatever ordinary matter they met. Quantum energy is also often invoked as a potential cause for Apocalypse. During an experiment in high-energy physics, scientists could accidently trigger a quantum vacuum collapse or destroy the universe. Creation of a naked singularity on Earth during the course of a scientific experiment, or other foreseeable scientific accidents in high-energy physics research, such as vacuum phase transition or strangelet incidents.
Strange matter
Our entire planet including everything on it becomes a strange matter planet in a chain reaction theoretical physicists call "Ice-9 Type Transition".
