The contents of the first two secrets, relating to God's punishment for mankind's sins, a prophecy of the outbreak of the World War II, and a prophecy of the Soviet Union's efforts to destroy religion under Communism, have been known for many years.
The third secret, written down more than 50 years ago by one of the children, refers to a bishop dressed in white being killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him. Cardinal Ratzinger (now the Pope) said at the time that the secret predicted the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981 by a Turk, Ali Agca, in St Peter's Square in Rome. That shooting happened on 13 May - the same day as the first of the Fatima visions in 1917. There are other references to a possible Apocalypse.
Lucía, the only survivor of the three little shepherds that saw the Virgin Mary, said that she would still be alive when the Great Punishment occurred. She is now a very old lady.
Referring to one of the striking images in the secret, Cardinal Ratzinger said the terrifying vision of an angel with a flaming sword, "represents the threat of judgement which looms over the world".
